Theater J, Washington DC

"Theater J embraces inclusion in all of its programs and activities. Theater J strives to make our productions accessible to all by providing the following to meet the accessibility needs of our patrons and to enhance their experience at the theater."

Julia Harris, Patron Experiences Manager for Theater J in Washington DC talked to AccessTech about how CCTheater resolved her frustrations with other approaches to captioning, and how it might help expand their accessibility offerings.

"We needed an affordable, easy to use, and reliable method of delivering captions to patrons for live theatrical productions upon request. We had been adapting NetSupport (a teacher tool) to project a live display of a teacher computer to student tablets, but minor disruptions in our wifi caused complete malfunctions and was not suitable for live performance.

The other option we were exploring was GalaPro, which is significantly more expensive, is not nearly as editable as CCTheater, and requires installation of expensive hardware. CCTheater met our tech and budget needs and Bradley has been incredibly responsive and helpful.

Right now, we are just using the captioning feature of CCTheater but we are looking into offering Audio Description performances as well. A significant portion of our audience speaks Hebrew or Spanish, so translated captions is also something we're considering for the future.

Our patrons have been very happy with CCTheater! They have been through several different captioning technologies (included an LED display that scrolled through an Excel doc) and they say that this is the easiest to use. We currently have 4 tablets per performance, and we'd like to offer more."
